League product lead for competitive gameplay Cody “Codebear” Germain addressed the state of ranked and matchmaking in today’s Dev Corner post. While things like autofill and duo balance are “nearly ready for launch,” a number of more complex ranked systems are in development for the remainder of 2020.
What is matchmaking in League of Legends?
Matchmaking is the existing automated process in League of Legends that matches a player to and against other players in games. The system estimates how good a player is based on whom the player beats and to whom the player loses.
What will League’s second half of 2020 look like?
The second half of 2020 will be dedicated to fixing a few community complaints that hinder the ranked experience. Many players feel like League has grown more toxic in recent years, with players intentionally feeding, griefing, or raging and facing little consequence for their actions.

What is the new matchmaking algorithm in League of Legends?
The new matchmaking algorithm will be finding its way to ranked queues in early preseason to avoid major impact to ranked MMR during the current season. Ranked Account Seeding: Formerly known as “New Account Seeding,” Ranked Account Seeding is built to more accurately place you in your first games of Ranked.
How long does League of Legends ranked season last?
The current ranked season, Season 11, kicked off on January 8, 2021. Seasons last nearly a year and is divided into three splits, which each last three months. What are the ranks in League of Legends called?
How has League of legends changed over the years?
Overall match quality improved, with less than one division of skill difference between teams for 99% of games. Time to game (from queue start to match start) stayed the same or improved in every region. We saw autofill reduced to less than 2% of games in almost every region.

What percentage of League of Legends players are elite?
I believe League of Legends achieved an optimal distribution in the low and mid tiers. Diamond is an elite group restricted to 3.7% of the player base, but note that a year ago it was limited to 2%. Likewise, now Platinum includes the top 18%, while before it didn’t exceed 10%.
