If both customer and supplier are happy they can put whatever date they want on the invoice. As for semantics, its been shown time and again that failing to state ones assumptions can lead to all kinds of difficulty. Fair enough, I suppose Im surprised that you consider that reasonable.

Unless within 14 days of basic taxpoint, it doesnt matter for VAT. Assuming that the accounts accurately reflect the timing of the supply, it shouldnt matter for direct tax, either. So can someone please explain the mischief in dating an invoice, the date of which has been agreed by both customer and supplier.

So, in a word, Is it legal? - No. Is it dishonest ... ... if the client has approved the date to be put on the invoice (or indeed suggested the back-dating in the first place)? The invoice date shows proof of purchase while the dealer shipment date is the day the item is shipped to the customer. The item could be received the same day or in a number of days or weeks, depending on the agreement between the dealer and customer.

The invoice date being before or after a delivery date is not a legitimate reason for not paying an invoice. Yes completely agree with the other posters, this is nonsense and probably a delaying tactic, almost all companies I have dealt with have an invoice dated when the invoice is raised.

If you are illegally dating invoices then you will need to make your MD aware of this. We can only pay you based on the delivery date and not a pre dated invoice.
