It terminates at your air handler or furnace. The white wire connects to terminal W in industry-standard thermostats. If your HVAC system has multiple heating stages, then you may find more than one white wire. The yellow wires underneath your thermostat connect to your compressor. They control your air conditioning system.
What are the different types of thermostat wirings?
We will cover the most common thermostat wirings for 2 wire, 3 wire, 4 wire, and 5 wire thermostats. At every stage, we will point out what 2 wire or 5 wire thermostats are used to wire, for example, to get a bigger picture of where those color wires go and how they enable the functions of air conditioners and furnaces.
What if I dont know the wiring for my thermostat?
If you do not know the terminal that each wire connects to, it may be necessary to go to the HVAC system and look at the designations on the control board. For typical wiring examples, and for clarification of what types of systems your thermostat works with, please consult your owners/install guide. *
Can I connect my thermostat to my air conditioner?
Connecting your thermostat to your AC unit is relatively easy, and although you may want to hire the job done, it can often be performed by the average homeowner. However, if your wires are not connected the right way to the furnace control board, your air conditioner will not operate.
How do I connect my air conditioner to my house?
It’s important to note that these two AC wires don’t link straight to the contact terminal for your unit. Typically the AC wires will be attached to two more wires connected by wire nuts. Those connected wires will then attach to the contact, which will send signals to your AC unit. Now it’s time to connect your air conditioner.

These wires should be either connected to the old thermostat, which you would replace, or they are located inside the AC unit ready to be used.
In heat pump system, there are at least 8 wires that need to be connected to the thermostat for proper operation. What temperature should I set my heat pump in the summer? Your heat pump temperature shouldn’t be any higher than 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius) during the summer.

One of the terminals will be labeled C and if there is a wire connected to that terminal, then you know you have a C wire.
What should I do if my thermostat doesn’t work?
The first thing you should do is check for any loose wires. If all the wires are in the correct place, the next step is to see if you mistakenly installed a four wire thermostat to a five wire base. When this is the case, you should immediately remove all wires since it can cause damage to the entire system.
Where do the wires go on a new thermostat?
If you have a C wire, place it into the C terminal on your wall plate. Lets take a look at the G wire. This wire will go to the G terminal on your new thermostat. For the Y, Y1, and Y2 wires, Y or Y1 will go to the Y terminal, and Y2 will go to the Y2 terminal. The O/B wire can have many configurations.
