Keeping track of how the system picks your opponent can get a little tricky, but once you break it down and take a closer look, things start to make sense. MTG Arena’s matchmaking relies on the ranking system to decide your opponents, and then breaks down a little more from there .
How do I set defensive teams for Grand Arena Events?
Each Grand Arena event will have 1 preview phase. This allows a user to join the Grand Arena and locks in the GP and mods. During this phase you will set your defensive teams. The number of defensive squads/fleets scales based on the GP of the lowest player in the group. The total number of defensive squads can change per Grand Arena event.
How do mods affect the Grand Arena event?
Once matchmaking has completed, each players GP and characters are locked in for the entire rest of the Grand Arena matchups. This means that further improvements to units including changing Mods will not affect the Grand Arena event for any of the rounds.
What is the best way to win Grand Arena awards?
Always set defense, first of all. Good defensive teams would be KRU, Revan, Bastila, Nightsisters, and several other teams. Try to save CLS and Nightmare for offense, and if there is an easy team, dont underestimate it, but use an undersized team for more banners and try to get some of the grand arena awards.

What happens if you lose a match in MTG Arena?
In first rank (Bronze), losses don’t lose you any tiers but once you get to the next rank (Silver) you will start to lose tiers if you lose a match. Once you’ve climbed to a new rank (e.g., from Bronze to Silver) you won’t get knocked back down to a lower rank. So once you’ve made Mythic in MTG Arena, you won’t drop out until the end of the season.
What is MMR in MTG Arena?
Under the surface of the rank Arena gives you, you’ve got an “MMR” (matchmaking rank) which is assigned to you based on your gameplay. There are three different MMRs that MTGA keeps track of as you play: Open Play MMR, Constructed MMR, and Limited MMR. These help to keep you playing against the “right” opponent regardless of which deck you choose.
How does The MTGA ranking system work?
The ranking system creates a list that determines the rank for each player by applying this type of data collection to everyone that plays MTGA or who participates in events. Whereas standard Arena battles earn you 20 Arena Coins per victory, Grand Arena Coins are earned passively on a per-hour basis and based on your ranking on the global leaderboard – that means if you’re satisfied with your ranking, you can go days without a Grand Arena battle, as you don’t have to fight in order to add to your Arena Coin totals.
