Please remember, however, that the Marshall dating system only applies to amplifiers and combos, not to speaker cabinets; but if you are trying to date a speaker cabinet from mid-1969 or earlier, you can always try and use the Celestion date code.
Why did Marshall stop using “a” date codes on the JCM 900?
Also, they werent so studiously applied by Marshall when the JCM 800 series was launched, and not used at all on the JCM 900 amplifiers. “A” date code was used from July 1969 to December 1970 inclusive, which was why they dropped “B”. “I”, “O”, and “Q” were deleted due to their similarity to numbers.

When did Marshall start using serial numbers for serial numbers?
Starting in October 1992, Marshall moved away from stamped metal plate serials and began using stickers with a xx-xxxxx-xx format serial and a bar code. Cabinets had serials at this point as well. The sticker-based nine digit scheme lasted through July 1997. These serials are much easier to understand, as they dont include any model or date codes.
How can I tell how old my Marshall speakers are?
If the speakers in your Marshall cabinet or combo are original, they can provide another piece of evidence when determining the date of manufacture. As many cabinets did not have official serial numbers before 1992, this can be especially helpful in dating earlier specimens.
